Horse Racing News: Next Extends Win Streak with Dominant Brooklyn (G2) Victory

(June 11, 2023 – Aqueduct Racetrack)

Next, the horse that loves running long distances, did it again on Friday, capturing the Grade 2 Brooklyn Stakes at Aqueduct and earning the highest speed figures of the past week in the process.

Ridden by jockey Luan Machado, the 6-year-old gelding cut back to 1 3/8 miles and won the Brooklyn by an impressive 9 1/4 lengths for trainer William Cowans. Next’s performance was rewarded with a sparkling 109 Brisnet Speed Rating and the same Beyer Speed Figure, marking his fifth consecutive victory.

Next’s winning streak dates back to last year’s Brooklyn Stakes triumph, with the other wins coming at distances of 1 1/2 miles or more, showcasing his prowess at extended distances.

In other notable performances, the Michael McCarthy-trained Sweet Azteca earned a 106 Brisnet and Beyer Speed Figure for her victory in the Great Lady M (G2) Stakes at Los Alamitos. Jockey John Velazquez guided the 4-year-old daughter of Sharp Azteca to a five-length win, setting a new track record of 1:14.33 for the 6 1/2-furlong distance. Sweet Azteca has now won four of her five career starts, including the Beholder Mile (G1) in March.
