Goodwood Racetrack Hosts Thrilling Weekend Racing Action
In the feature event, the William Hill Celebration Mile Stakes, it was the Burke-trained gelding Ice Max who emerged victorious. Jockey Clifford Lee displayed a masterful ride, patiently waiting for the right moment to pounce and deny Simon and Ed Crisford’s Poker Face, who had attempted to make all the running.
“The more rain that fell, the more confident we were,” said a delighted trainer Karl Burke. “He is a progressive, talented horse and when he learns to settle better will stay further. We are delighted with his performance.”
Earlier on the card, the William Hill Prestige Fillies’ Stakes saw Anshoda book her ticket to the prestigious Breeders’ Cup in America. The filly, trained by David Loughnane, followed up an impressive debut win at Lingfield with a gutsy Group Three triumph, prompting connections to set their sights on the lucrative Del Mar showpiece in November.
“She’s American-owned now and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf will very much be her target, and we will work our way back from there,” revealed Loughnane. “She has a few entries between the Rockfel and the Fillies’ Mile, and I always felt getting her up to a mile is when you would see her true ability โ she’s tough and she grinds it out.”
With the Goodwood Festival now in the rearview mirror, horse racing fans eagerly await the next chapter of the sport’s thrilling narrative.
