Sparkling Plenty Triumphs in Classic Prix de Diane at Chantilly
In an enthralling finish to the prestigious Prix de Diane at Chantilly racecourse, the David Menuisier-trained Sparkling Plenty edged out Survie in an all-French affair to claim the Classic event. Tamfana had to settle for third place behind the top two.
Jockey Tony Piccone masterfully guided the Kingman filly Sparkling Plenty to a narrow victory, providing a first Classic success for her trainer Patrice Cottier. “It’s fantastic and I was thinking I have a good chance but the race went like a dream,” the winning jockey told Sky Sports Racing.
The race saw Carlos Laffon-Parias’ Halfday lead the field, with Oisin Murphy keeping Tamfana, Menuisier’s star filly, within striking distance, eager to avoid a repeat of her luckless 1000 Guineas performance.
As the field entered the straight, Sparkling Plenty began to make her move from the rear, catching the eye with her powerful surge. While Tamfana’s challenge faded late on, Sparkling Plenty found an extra gear and had just enough in hand to secure the victory.
For Sussex-based French trainer Menuisier, it was a bittersweet moment. “I have joy and sadness running through me, but I’m very proud,” he said. “She ran her heart out and did the hard work, but I’m obviously disappointed as well because she looked like the winner.”
Menuisier believes Tamfana may have been better suited over a mile, but remains confident they can correct the step up in trip for future assignments. This Classic triumph for Sparkling Plenty and Cottier is sure to be celebrated by the French racing community.
