Ascot Raceday Highlights: No Nay Never Filly Impresses, Illinois Seeks Group 1 Glory, Laurel Returns, Auguste Rodin Targets Bounce Back
In the lead-up to the prestigious Ascot Racecourse meeting, Horse Racing News takes a closer look at some of the key contenders and storylines.
15:05 Ascot – Illinois
Jockey Luke Morris is confident in the chances of Illinois, who ran well to finish Group 1-placed as a juvenile. > “He has just about achieved the most to date, and obviously the 1m2f, Group 1-placed juvenile ran well to chase home the subsequent Derby second Ambiente Friendly at Lingfield, with subsequent Goodwood scorer Meydaan in third. He shapes as though this greater test of stamina will suit, though this will probably be the quickest ground he has raced on.”
15:45 Ascot – Laurel
Jockey Luke Morris is reunited with the talented Laurel, who impressed with a Group 1 victory at three. > “I rode her when she was very impressive at Kempton last season, and she also had Group 1 form at three, as well. We haven’t seen her since she disappointed in the Lockinge last year, so she has a big absence to overcome, but she is right in the mix here on her best form and she has shown she can handle quick ground, too.”
16:25 Ascot – Auguste Rodin
Trainer Aidan O’Brien is hopeful that the weather will suit Auguste Rodin, who is looking to bounce back to his best form. > “We were hoping the weather would stay dry for him, and it looks like doing so. He looks great at the moment and he is going very well. We all know what a top-notch performer he is at his best โ just have a look at his winning CV last season โ but he hasn’t hit that level so far in this campaign.”
The Ascot action promises to be thrilling, with a No Nay Never filly making an eye-catching debut, Illinois seeking further Group 1 glory, the return of the talented Laurel, and Auguste Rodin‘s bid to recapture his winning touch.
