The Triple Crown Tracker: Recapping the 2024 Classics and Beyond
The 2024 Triple Crown series has concluded, and the horse racing world is eagerly awaiting the next chapter for the participants. The Triple Crown Tracker provides updates on the performances and plans for the equine stars who competed in this year’s Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.
2024 Kentucky Derby Recap
Five horses from the Kentucky Derby field returned to action on June 8 for the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown. The top finisher among them was Dornoch, who bounced back from a 10th-place outing in the Kentucky Derby to win the Belmont Stakes. Sierra Leone finished a troubled third, while Honor Marie, Mystik Dan, and Resilience finished fourth, eighth, and 10th, respectively.
Two other Kentucky Derby entrants, Domestic Product and West Saratoga, have also seen recent action. Domestic Product finished second in the Pegasus, a local prep for the Haskell (G1) Invitational, while West Saratoga finished fifth in the Matt Winn (G3) at Churchill Downs.
Looking ahead, Catching Freedom, who ran fourth in the Kentucky Derby, and Mugatu, who did not draw in off the also-eligible list, will both make their first starts since the Preakness Stakes in Saturday’s Ohio Derby (G3) at Thistledown.
2024 Preakness Stakes Recap
Three horses from the Preakness Stakes have been in action since the second jewel of the Triple Crown. The top two finishers, Seize the Grey and Mystik Dan, finished seventh and eighth in the Belmont Stakes, respectively. Imagination, who finished seventh in the Preakness, came home seventh in the Woody Stephens (G1) on the Belmont undercard.
In addition to Catching Freedom and Mugatu, Uncle Heavy, who finished sixth in the Preakness, will also compete in the Ohio Derby on Saturday.
2024 Belmont Stakes Recap
With the Belmont Stakes less than two weeks in the rearview mirror, none of the horses in the field have returned to the work tab yet. However, with Belmont winner Dornoch being considered for the Haskell (G1) Invitational on July 20, it won’t be long before the 2024 Belmont Stakes participants start gearing up for their summer targets.
As the horse racing world shifts its focus to the summer stakes schedule, the Triple Crown Tracker will continue to provide updates on the performances and plans for the equine stars who competed in this year’s classics.
