Royal Ascot 2024: Day Two Highlights
The second day of the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting saw some thrilling action on the track, with jockey Oisin Murphy completing a double in the Royal Hunt Cup and the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes.
In the Queen Mary Stakes, Wathnan Racing’s filly Leovanni (22/1) stormed to victory, drawing clear of her rivals under the guidance of jockey James Doyle. Trained by Karl Burke, the youngster made a big impression on just her second career start, winning by a length and three-quarters.
Oisin Murphy continued his excellent form, first steering the John and Thady Gosden-trained Running Lion (6/1) to victory in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes. The chestnut mare led from the front and held off the late challenge of stablemate Laurel to provide Murphy with his second winner of the day.
Murphy then partnered the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Wild Tiger (11/2) to success in the prestigious Royal Hunt Cup. The four-year-old colt held off the late charge of last year’s winner, Sonny Liston, to provide the Godolphin trainer with a third victory in the mile contest.
Elsewhere on the card, Illinois (7/4 favorite) ground out victory in the Queen’s Vase for trainer Aidan O’Brien, taking his tally in the race to eight and equaling the record of the late Sir Henry Cecil. The Galileo colt is now set to be targeted at the St Leger later in the season.
In the Kensington Palace Stakes, Doha (10/1) prevailed for trainer Ralph Beckett, overhauling the favorite Hopeful in the closing stages to provide jockey Hector Crouch with a first Royal Ascot winner.
The day’s action concluded with a triumph for the Punting Pointers, as their 14/1 selection Ain’t Nobody (5/1) landed the Windsor Castle Stakes for trainer Kevin Ryan and jockey Jamie Spencer.
“With more top-class racing to come over the next three days, the 2024 Royal Ascot meeting continues to captivate racing enthusiasts across the globe.”
