Elson Boy Continues to Impress in Spring Preparations

Dubbo-based trainer Dar Lunn is eagerly anticipating the spring campaign for his in-form gelding Elson Boy, who is riding a hot streak of five consecutive victories.

The son of El Roca, purchased for just $6,000, required some time to find his best form on the racetrack, but has now blossomed under Lunn’s guidance. The trainer revealed the key tactical change that sparked Elson Boy’s remarkable turnaround, sharing:

“I was riding him that way, getting him out the back door and running home and it took him ten starts to win a maiden so I thought I’d better do something different, so we put a set of blinkers on him and rode him completely different and he won. Ever since then that’s the way we’ve been riding him, it just sort of suited him.”

Elson Boy booked his ticket to the prestigious Country Championships Final at Randwick earlier this year, but was ultimately forced to miss the million-dollar showpiece due to a muscle injury sustained in the lead-up. Undeterred, Lunn is now plotting a path towards potential feature race success, with the gelding set to take on a Benchmark 78 event over 1300m at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

“We’re getting a new track put in so we haven’t been able to get on the track that much, but in saying that he did work well this morning,” Lunn commented. “We’ll go around at Rosehill on Saturday and win, lose or draw I’d say we’ll give him a let up for a month to six weeks and come back and look for a nice race, something like The Kosciuszko probably wouldn’t be beyond him.”

Apprentice Chelsea Hillier, who has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Elson Boy, retaining the ride for this weekend’s assignment and claiming a valuable 3kg allowance. With the gelding’s consistent performances and Lunn’s confidence in his ability, punters will no doubt have Elson Boy firmly on their radar as the spring carnival approaches.
