Maher Aims for Tiara Glory with Bella Nipotina and Semana

Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane – (June 17, 2023)

Ciaron Maher, the renowned Australian racehorse trainer, is eyeing a prestigious victory in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) on Saturday, with two of his talented mares, Bella Nipotina and Semana, set to take center stage.

Bella Nipotina, a rising star on the turf, has been drawing comparisons to Maher’s previous grand mare, Srikandi, who secured the trainer his sole win in the fillies’ and mares feature back in 2015. Bella Nipotina will be aiming to emulate Srikandi’s success by completing the Doomben 10,000-Tatt’s Tiara double.

Maher highlighted the similarities between the two mares, stating, “> They’re very similar types, very similar demeanours, very similar in every way. Their make-up, their conformation, even their colour.” The trainer believes Bella Nipotina has matured into a “very similar horse” to the legendary Srikandi.

Bella Nipotina, renowned for her bravery and fortitude, has won eight of her 51 starts and recorded 23 minor placings. Her latest effort was a narrow second-place finish in the Stradbroke Handicap, where she conceded the winner Stefi Magnetica six kilos. Maher is unfazed by the prospect of drawing barrier 17 for the Tatt’s Tiara, stating, “She has been just as effective from wide as inside, and no rhyme or reason for why.”

Stablemate Semana, the winner of the Triscay Stakes earlier this year, is also given a chance in the Tatt’s Tiara, priced at $12. Maher believes the 1400m distance is ideal for Semana, who was hampered by a poor start in the Stradbroke Handicap.

With both mares in top form, Ciaron Maher is confident in their chances of success in the prestigious Tatt’s Tiara on Saturday. The veteran trainer will be hoping to emulate Srikandi’s 2015 triumph and add another Group 1 victory to his impressive resume.
