Horse Racing News: Hawthorne Race Course Leads the Way in Putting Horseplayers First

(Cicero, IL – September 1, 2023) Hawthorne Race Course, the Chicago-area racetrack, has solidified its reputation as a true champion for horseplayers. In a move that has resonated throughout the industry, the track has lowered its takeout on win, place, and show wagers to just 12%, offering the lowest takeout of any wager in North America with an 8% place Pick 8.

Recognizing the importance of engaging with their loyal fan base, Hawthorne has also introduced a series of pool parties across their off-track betting network, along with rake-free contests that run throughout the year. But the crown jewel of their player-centric initiatives is the Hawthorne Invitational contest.

The Hawthorne Invitational: A Premier Horseplayer Event

Now in its fifth year, the Hawthorne Invitational invites more than 60 of the top players in the game to compete in a one-day tournament that is livestreamed for all to enjoy. This year’s $2,500 buy-in event features a first prize of $10,000 cash, plus a coveted berth in the National Handicapping Championship with a million-dollar bonus for completing the HI-NHC double.

“Hawthorne views players as such an important part of the game,” said Dakota Schultz, the track’s head of marketing. “We’re led by players themselves, including president John Walsh, director of racing Jim Miller, and accomplished handicapper Emily Gullikson. They love the game and have been instrumental in involving players in our strategy to grow racing and our business.”

The Hawthorne Invitational has attracted some of the biggest names in the sport, including American Hockey Hall of Famer and NBC analyst Eddie Olczyk. Olczyk, who has a long-standing relationship with the track, won last year’s event in dramatic fashion, cashing an 81-1 shot on the final race to finish with a bankroll of $52,921.

“Hawthorne always has the horseplayer in mind,” said Olczyk, who resides in the Chicago suburbs. “What they’ve done with the Invitational takes it to the next level, especially now that Hawthorne is the only racetrack in town. I love supporting it.”

Promoting the Excitement of Betting on Horse Racing

The Hawthorne Invitational not only showcases the best contest players, but also serves as a platform to highlight the excitement of betting on horse racing. Last year’s winning moment, captured on the livestream, went viral on social media, garnering hundreds of thousands of views across all platforms.

“Racing needs to do a better job promoting that excitement,” Olczyk urged. “The equine athlete is where it all starts, but after that it’s the gambler and the money we bring in. Casinos and sports books do a great job celebrating massive scores. Racing should follow Hawthorne’s lead.”

With its player-first initiatives, Hawthorne Race Course has set a new standard in the industry, proving that when you put the horseplayer first, the dividends can be immense.
