Victorian Horse Racing News: Promising Two-Year-Old Filly Supercilious Shines at Sandown
Despite the off-season lull in Victorian racing, top jockey Blake Shinn believes connections of the talented young filly Supercilious have reason to be optimistic about her future prospects.
Shinn, who piloted the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained daughter of Written Tycoon to an impressive on-pace victory in the 1300-metre 2YO Fillies Maiden at Sandown on Wednesday, drew comparisons to a similar race from just over a year ago.
“This time of year can get some good fillies, last year Coeur Volante came through a race like this and went on to win the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude and finish fourth in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas,” Shinn said. “So this type of race can throw up a good filly, and I think Supercilious is one of them.”
Supercilious, a $300,000 yearling purchase, is a three-quarter-sister to Group 2 winner Marine One and Group 1 placegetter Cannonball. Shinn was impressed by the filly’s attributes, noting her size, character, and impressive stride as indications she can progress to higher levels of competition.
“She’s quite a big filly, she’s got a bit of swagger about her, good character and you see when she lengthens that she’s got a great action and got good attributes that will get her to a better level,” Shinn said.
Supercilious ($3.50) led throughout and showed a nice turn of foot in the straight to win by one length over Savvyrocker ($9.50), with the $2.80 favorite Clean Reef a further 1-1/4 lengths back in third.
The victory was the first leg of an early double for Shinn, who then followed up with a win aboard the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Spirit Of Boom filly Mighty in the 1000-metre Benchmark 70 for fillies and mares.
With the promise shown by Supercilious, connections will be hoping she can follow in the footsteps of last year’s standout two-year-old Coeur Volante and continue her progression through the spring carnival.
