Trainer Suspended for Violation of Integrity Rules
In a major development in the world of horse racing, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) has handed down significant suspensions and fines to several individuals involved in a case of “paper training.” According to reports from BloodHorse, trainer Nevada Litfin has been suspended for five years and fined $2,500 for violating the terms of an earlier suspension.
The investigation revealed that Litfin had continued to care for and train horses while serving a suspension between August 23, 2023, and January 21, 2024, for medication violations. This practice, known as “paper training,” is a clear violation of HISA’s rules and regulations.
In addition to Litfin’s punishment, HISA has also taken action against other individuals involved in the case. Groom Heather Davis has been suspended for three years, while trainer Briannah McDaniel, who admitted to acting as Litfin’s “paper trainer” during his period of ineligibility, has been suspended for 45 days.
“This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity and transparency in the sport of horse racing. HISA’s decisive action in this matter sends a clear message that any violation of the Authority’s rules and regulations will be met with severe consequences.”
However, it’s worth noting that McDaniel’s suspension was reduced due to her substantial assistance and cooperation with the Authority during the proceedings. She has agreed to abide by and complete the terms of her substantial-assistance agreement with HISA.
It’s important to emphasize that all three individuals โ Litfin, Davis, and McDaniel โ have agreed to the terms of their respective suspensions and fines, as outlined in the HISA order signed by the Authority’s board of directors chair, Charles Scheeler.
Interestingly, Litfin was able to continue running horses in Louisiana last fall and winter, as that state is currently exempt from HISA’s rules and regulations. His last race under his own name was on February 10 at Delta Downs.
