Attard Building Strong Season on the Track

Veteran trainer Kevin Attard is enjoying a productive year on the racetrack, backed by some noteworthy victories at Woodbine and beyond. The Attard-trained Moira, Canada’s reigning Horse of the Year and top 3-year-old filly in 2022, captured the prestigious Grade 2 Beverly D. Stakes on Sunday at Colonial Downs, prevailing in a thrilling finish over rival Fev Rover.

Just a day earlier, stablemate Full Count Felicia led gate-to-wire to win the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes at Woodbine, Attard’s home base. That marked the third graded stakes triumph of the year for the Ontario-based conditioner, a significant improvement from just one apiece in each of the previous two seasons.

“It’s been an up-and-down season,” Attard acknowledged to Horse Racing Nation on Monday. “But we’re hoping the back end of the year gets to be a little smoother and maybe sets us up for next season.”

Attard currently has 75 horses in training at Woodbine and will be represented by four starters in Saturday’s prestigious Queen’s Plate. He provided updates on his top runners, including Moira’s potential next start in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on September 14.

The trainer also discussed the progress of promising sophomores Live Lucky and Caitlinhergrtness, as well as the consistent Fashionably Fab and a pair of exciting 2-year-olds in Skylight Caper and Salt.

With a strong roster of talent and momentum building, Attard appears poised for an even bigger second half of the 2023 racing season.
