Belmont Stakes: The Final Jewel of the Triple Crown Shines in 2024
As the horse racing world turns its attention to Saratoga Race Course, anticipation is building for the highly anticipated 2024 Belmont Stakes. This historic race, the final leg of the prestigious Triple Crown, is set to take center stage on June 8th, marking a momentous occasion in the sport.
The Belmont Stakes, first run in 1867, is the oldest of the three Triple Crown races. Steeped in tradition, this “Test of the Champion” has witnessed some of the most iconic moments in the sport’s history. From Sir Barton’s groundbreaking Triple Crown triumph in 1919 to Secretariat’s record-breaking performance in 1973, the Belmont Stakes has solidified its place as a true test of a horse’s endurance and determination.
This year’s edition, however, will be a departure from the norm. Due to ongoing renovations at Belmont Park, the race will be held at Saratoga Race Course, with a distance of 1¼ miles instead of the traditional 1½ miles. While the distance may be shorter, the challenge remains just as demanding, as horses and jockeys will vie for the coveted Belmont Stakes trophy.
Among the top contenders for the 2024 Belmont Stakes is Mystik Dan, the thrilling winner of the Kentucky Derby. This long-shot hero defied the odds at Churchill Downs and will look to continue his remarkable run in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, before facing off against the best in the business at Saratoga.
Jockey profiles will be a key focus leading up to the big race, with rising star Jena Antonucci hoping to make history as the first female trainer to capture the Belmont Stakes. Antonucci’s charge, Arcangelo, has been impressive on the Derby and Preakness trail and will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of Julie Krone, the first woman to win the Belmont Stakes in 1993.
The Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, a four-day extravaganza of elite-level racing, will once again captivate fans. Between June 6th and June 9th, Saratoga will host 24 stakes races, totaling over $10 million in purses. This miniature Breeders’ Cup in the middle of the season promises to deliver thrilling performances across all divisions of North American thoroughbred racing.
As the countdown to the 2024 Belmont Stakes continues, horse racing enthusiasts eagerly await the chance to witness the crowning of a new champion. Whether it’s Mystik Dan extending his Triple Crown bid or a new face emerging victorious, the final jewel of the Triple Crown is sure to shine brightly at Saratoga Race Course on June 8th.
