Horse Racing News: Blue Stratum Targets Stakes Glory After Dominant Moonee Valley Win
In the world of horse racing, the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained colt Blue Stratum is poised to make an impact, with the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield next Saturday being his likely next outing.
Blue Stratum, who won the Dominant Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, is just one good week away from potentially gracing the Stakes race stage. Ridden by jockey Beau Mertens, the colt held on to score by a nose from the fast-finishing Last Druid, with Immortal Star a long neck away in third.
Trainer’s Perspective
Trainer Tony McEvoy, who took advantage of galloping Blue Stratum at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning, believes that the experience gained from that session was a significant factor in the colt’s success on Saturday.
“I think it is important to familiarise these young horses,” McEvoy said. “He raced really well, and Beau rode him beautifully.”
McEvoy is reluctant to step Blue Stratum up to 1200m at this stage of his campaign and prefers to keep him to slightly shorter trips.
“He’s pulled-up beautiful. He’s only got to eat up at home and he’ll be there,” McEvoy said. “We might run him next week in the Vain and then later on in the Poseidon Stakes (1100m at Flemington) and he has run very well down the straight when he ran second in the Maribyrnong, so I think we’ll keep him shorter than 1200 (metres) at the moment.”
Fans of the sport will be eagerly awaiting Blue Stratum’s next outing, as the colt’s performances continue to impress and his connections explore the possibility of a Stakes race debut in the near future.
