Exciting Horse Racing News: Brazil’s Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Kenlova Leads Stellar Field in Prestigious Grande Premio Brasil

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – The stage is set for an electrifying race as Stud Magia’s homebred Kenlova, Brazil’s champion 3-Year-Old Filly for 2023, leads a star-studded field of 16 runners in the prestigious Group 1 Grande Premio Brasil this Sunday at Hipodromo Da Gavea in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of this 1 1/2-mile turf race will earn an automatic starting position and have their fees paid for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Turf, part of the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Challenge series.

Kenlova, a 4-year-old daughter of Didimo, has been nothing short of dominant, having won 9 of her 15 career starts, including 3 Group 1 victories and 5 Group 2 triumphs. Trained by the talented Emerson Garcia, Kenlova is coming off a remarkable 2022-2023 season where she won 6 of her 8 races, highlighted by last May’s 1 1/4-mile Organizacion Sudamericana de Fomento de Sangre Pura de Carrera (G1) at Hipodromo de Cidade Jardim in Sao Paulo, and the 1 1/4-mile Roberto e Nelson Seabra (G1) five weeks later at Gavea. These impressive wins sealed her championship title.

Kenlova’s latest triumph came in the May 19 Sao Paulo, where she edged out Haras Rio Iguassu’s Obataye, a 3-year-old son of Courtier, by a nose going 1 1/2 miles at Jardim. Obataye, trained by Antonio Oldoni, had won three consecutive races by a nose prior to that narrow defeat.

Another key contender in the Grande Premio Brasil is Haras Doce Vale’s Underpants, a 3-year-old son of Emcee. Trained by Ildefonso Coelho De Souza, Underpants earned his first Group 1 victory in the April 7 Cruzeiro do Sul at Gavea, winning the 1 1/2-mile race by 1 3/4 lengths.

Haras Do Morro’s Mapa Do Brasil, another son of Emcee, finished third in the Cruzeiro do Sul but bounced back with an impressive 4-length win in the May 1 Nove de Maio (G2) at Gavea, covering the 1 1/2 miles under trainer Luiz Claudio Costa.

The field is further bolstered by other Group 1 winners, including the 5-year-old Online, owned by Stud Verde and trained by Luiz Claudio Costa, who captured the 1 1/4-mile Escorial (G3) in February, and the 4-year-old Quantify from Stud Red Rafa, winner of the 2022 Francisco Eduardo de Paula Machado.

“With an exceptional lineup of Brazil’s top-class racehorses, the stage is set for an thrilling edition of the Group 1 Grande Premio Brasil this Sunday at Hipodromo Da Gavea. Racing enthusiasts are sure to be captivated by the unfolding drama as these equine stars compete for the coveted automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.”
