Horse Racing News: Bucanero Fuerte Aims for Comeback in My Pension Expert July Cup

Connections Hopeful for Colt’s Return After Setback

Connections are hoping to get the talented colt Bucanero Fuerte back on track for the prestigious My Pension Expert July Cup at Newmarket, after a setback that ruled him out of the recent Royal Ascot meeting. The son of Wootton Bassett, trained by Adrian Murray, made a name for himself last season with three victories, including a historic first Group One success for Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing operation.

The decision to focus Bucanero Fuerte’s campaign on sprint distances, rather than attempting Classic glory over a mile, appeared to be a shrewd move when the colt made a winning return in the Lacken Stakes at Naas. This performance had placed him among the favorites for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, but unfortunately, he was forced to miss the event, along with fellow contenders Vandeek and Elite Status.

“We’re thinking of the July Cup at Newmarket,” said trainer Adrian Murray. “He won’t be ready for France (Prix Jean Prat). We’re aiming for Newmarket, but whether we will have him ready in time, I don’t know.”

The team is aware that Bucanero Fuerte has lost some weight during his recovery and they are working to quickly build him back up to full fitness.

“He will have lost a good bit of weight and we’re having to build him back up,” Murray admitted. “We’re hoping to have him there, but there’s no guarantee.”

Regardless of whether Bucanero Fuerte makes the July Cup, the connections are confident they have plenty of other options for the talented sprinter as he continues his journey towards the top level of the sport.
