Horse Racing News: Charyn Clinches Second Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Victory in Prix Jacques Le Marois (G1)

(Deauville Racecourse, France – August 13, 2023) In a dominant display, Charyn added a second Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Group 1 victory to his resume with a smooth three-length triumph in Sunday’s prestigious Prix Jacques Le Marois (G1) at Deauville Racecourse.

The 4-year-old colt, trained by Roger Varian, had previously secured an automatic berth into this year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile by winning the June 18 Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. Now, Charyn’s latest victory at the top level has further solidified his credentials as a leading contender for the prestigious Breeders’ Cup event.

“It was a comfortable watch, I’m looking forward to seeing it again. He’s a great horse. He seems to be getting better and better. He made me cry this horse, he’s such a beautiful horse. He got the win and you’re in from the Queen Anne, so yes (the Breeders’ Cup) it’s an option. It’s nice to be invited but we’ll enjoy today first, it’s a great race to win.”

Sent off as the 9-10 favorite, Charyn settled beautifully in third position, tracking the early pace set by Metropolitan and Big Rock. As the field entered the final stages, Charyn displayed an impressive turn of foot, surging clear of Metropolitan, who claimed the runner-up spot. Two-time winner of this race, Inspiral, finished third, ahead of Quddwah in fourth.

Charyn completed the mile distance in a swift 1:33.98 over a course listed as good. This triumph represents a fourth win in five starts this year for the improving colt, and a first victory in the historic Prix Jacques Le Marois for both trainer Roger Varian and jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

“I feel great. He’s such a nice horse and this type of horse doesn’t come along often. I’ve been very lucky, and I’m just delighted to bag another Group 1 on him. He almost broke the track record, and I don’t think this is his type of ground but when you have his class you can go on anything.”

The victory in the Prix Jacques Le Marois has undoubtedly enhanced Charyn’s credentials as a leading contender for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile, and racing enthusiasts eagerly await his next appearance on the global stage.
