Newgate Returns to Work Tab for Baffert
Newgate, the winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March, made his return to the work tab on Friday, breezing three furlongs in 34.6 seconds at Del Mar for trainer Bob Baffert. This was the fastest of eight workouts at that distance.
After winning the Robert G. Lewis (G3) in February, the 4-year-old Into Mischief colt was given a break for the rest of the year. He returned in January, finishing second in an optional-claiming allowance and the San Pascual (G2) before his big Santa Anita ‘Cap score. Newgate then finished ninth in the Dubai World Cup (G1) in March and hasn’t raced since.
Along with Newgate, a total of 13 graded stakes winners had published workouts on Friday morning at various California and Florida training facilities.
Other notable works included:
- Express Train (Union Rags), winner of the 2022 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), going four furlongs in 51.2 seconds at Del Mar.
- Sweet Azteca (Sharp Azteca), winner of the 2024 Beholder Mile (G1), breezing five furlongs in 59.4 seconds at Del Mar.
- Wynstock (Solomini), victor of the 2023 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), working five furlongs in 1:01.6 at Del Mar.
