Horse Racing News: Cranbourne Trainer Gavin Bedggood Excited about Miss Icelandic’s Potential
Cranbourne, [Current Date] – Gavin Bedggood, a renowned horse racing trainer, is eager to take the career of his recent stable acquisition, Miss Icelandic, to new heights. The four-year-old Deep Field mare will make her debut for Bedggood in the Sportsbet Bet With Mates Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield this Saturday.
Miss Icelandic joined Bedggood’s stable after a successful stint with top Mornington trainer Matt Laurie, where she won five of her 11 starts. “She’s probably been really well-placed when you go back through her form, and I’ve probably got a task now because she’s got to take another step up,” Bedggood said.
Despite the challenge, the trainer is excited about the prospect of working with Miss Icelandic. “If she was up to it, it would be great to try and get some Black Type with her before the spring rolls around and capitalize on her being up and going nice and early,” he added.

Miss Icelandic’s only previous attempt at Black Type came in her final start for Laurie, where she finished sixth in the Listed City Of Marion Stakes at Morphettville in February. She had previously recorded three consecutive wins, the last one coming in a benchmark 70 race over the same course and distance as Saturday’s event.
In her preparations for the upcoming race, Miss Icelandic finished third in a 900m jumpout at Mornington on May 29 and again third, over 800m, behind stablemates Shalaman and Mornington Glory at Cranbourne on June 17. “I’ve only had the horse for three weeks and we gave her a jumpout last week, and I thought her trial was really good,” Bedggood said.
The trainer believes that Miss Icelandic will be improved by the run on Saturday, but he still expects her to be “thereabouts” in the race. The mare is currently priced at $6.50, with Kin ($4) and Mrs Chrissie ($5) ahead of her in the betting. Ben Allen will be in the saddle, and the pair will jump from barrier two.
