In a stunning upset, Dornoch, a 17-1 long shot, surged late to claim victory in the 156th running of the Belmont Stakes on June 8th at the Saratoga Race Course. This victory delivered trainer Danny Gargan his first-ever Triple Crown win.

Dornoch, co-owned by former MLB outfielder Jayson Werth, covered the 1 1/4-mile course in 2:01.64, crossing the finish line ahead of Mindframe in second place and Sierra Leone in third.

The full finishing order of the 10 horses that competed in the 156th Belmont Stakes was as follows:

  1. Dornoch
  2. Mindframe
  3. Sierra Leone
  4. Honor Marie
  5. Antiquarian
  6. Protective
  7. Seize the Grey
  8. Mystik Dan
  9. The Wine Steward
  10. Resilience

With the win, Dornoch earned an estimated $1.2 million from the approximately $2 million Belmont purse, as the winner typically receives 60% of the total prize money.

Prior to the Belmont Stakes, Dornoch had placed 10th in the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2024 at Churchill Downs. This was the second Belmont victory for jockey Luis Saez, who won in 2021 while riding Essential Quality.

Trainer Danny Gargan, who had not won a Triple Crown race before, was elated with Dornoch’s performance, saying, “This is an incredible moment for our team. Dornoch proved he has what it takes to compete at the highest level, and we’re thrilled to capture the Belmont Stakes title.”
