Horse Racing News Update: Charlie Fellowes Excited About Two-Year-Old Prospect Luther

Renowned horse trainer Charlie Fellowes is brimming with excitement about his two-year-old colt Luther, who he feels is one of the most promising young horses he has ever had in his stable. Fellowes is set to saddle Luther in the Betfair Daily Tips On Betting.Betfair Ascendant Stakes at Haydock Park this Saturday.

Luther, a son of the legendary sire Frankel, cost his connections a staggering 250,000 guineas as a yearling, and he has already shown glimpses of his immense potential in his two outings so far. After a winning debut at Salisbury, the colt returned to the same venue for the Stonehenge Stakes, where he was narrowly denied victory by Andrew Balding’s highly-regarded New Century, an experience Fellowes believes will only serve to benefit Luther’s development.

“I think he did everything wrong at Salisbury which was why it was so taking,” said Fellowes. “He had a setback after his debut win and I really wanted to run him at Ascot in the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes, but we missed that race and his lack of experience told.”

Buoyed by Luther’s promising performance in the Stonehenge Stakes, Fellowes now has his sights set on the Betfair Ascendant Stakes at Haydock, where he expects the colt to be “very competitive.” Beyond that, the trainer is considering potential targets such as the prestigious Royal Lodge Stakes at the end of September.

“The plan is to go to the Ascendent at Haydock over a mile and I hope he will be very competitive. After that we could maybe head to the Royal Lodge or something at the end of September. He is a good horse and as nice a two-year-old as I have had, so I’m looking forward to him,” Fellowes commented.

In addition to the exciting prospect of Luther, Fellowes also has his eye on the potential return of another stable star, The Wizard Of Eye. The horse, who won the Victoria Cup on his stable debut, ran a tremendous race in Group One company at Royal Ascot before an injury setback forced him onto the sidelines. Now deep into his recovery, Fellowes is hopeful that The Wizard Of Eye could make his comeback at either the bet365 Handicap at Ascot or the Betfred Park Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting.

“He is good and we are taking it a day at a time, but he galloped on Tuesday and worked good,” Fellowes said. “He could go to Ascot for the seven-furlong handicap or we could wait and go to Doncaster if I feel he needs another week. It’s a bit of a balancing act.”

With the promising prospects of Luther and The Wizard Of Eye, Fellowes and his Bedford House Stables operation have plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks and months.
