Caitlinhergrtness Wins Thrilling King’s Plate at Woodbine
(Woodbine Racetrack, Toronto, Ontario – August 23, 2024) In a captivating race at Woodbine Racetrack, the lone filly Caitlinhergrtness, named after basketball star Caitlin Clark, collared the post-time favorite My Boy Prince late to clinch a thrilling victory in the 165th running of the prestigious US$739,563 King’s Plate for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.
Originally scheduled six days earlier, the race was postponed due to torrential rain, but the compelling finish under perfect conditions on Friday made it well worth the wait for the enthusiastic crowd. Caitlinhergrtness, trained by Kevin Attard, earned her first stakes triumph in style, following a narrow second-place finish behind the winner in the US$369,781 Woodbine Oaks in her previous outing.
“She’s obviously all class and all racehorse,” said a delighted Attard, who conditions the chestnut daughter of Omaha Beach for owners Siena Farm and WinStar Farm. “She’s handled everything really well, and it took everything she had to run down My Boy Prince, who put in a gallant effort.”
Jockey Rafael Hernandez, who previously won the King’s Plate in 2022 with star filly Moira, guided Caitlinhergrtness to a three-quarter-length victory over the valiant My Boy Prince, with Midnight Mascot rallying for third. The final time for the 1 1/4-mile synthetic track event was 2:03.45.
