Gulfstream Park Cancels Race Cards Due to Heavy Rainfall
In the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall across South Florida, Gulfstream Park has been forced to cancel its race programs for both Thursday and Friday this week.
“The safety of our horsemen, fans and staff is our top priority,” said Gulfstream Park’s Director of Racing, John Velazquez. “With the amount of rain we’ve seen and the forecasts calling for more, it’s simply not feasible to conduct racing under these conditions.”
The National Weather Service has forecasted continued precipitation through Thursday evening, leading the track’s management to call off the scheduled nine-race card on Friday. This comes after Gulfstream had already scrapped Thursday’s full slate of races due to the inclement weather.
The wet weather has caused significant damage and flooding in parts of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties since Wednesday afternoon. Gulfstream’s prime Saturday program, featuring the $95,000 Powder Break for fillies and mares and the $75,000 Wildcat Red for 3-year-olds and up, is still scheduled to proceed as planned, though the National Weather Service has called for additional rain over the weekend.
In an effort to make up for the lost race days, the Gulfstream Park racing office will look to reschedule the events that were originally slated for Thursday and Friday as extra races next week.
Equestrian enthusiasts and racing fans will have to wait until Saturday to get their fix of top-class Thoroughbred action at the iconic South Florida venue.
