Hambletonian Glory: Karl Claims Victory in a Thrilling Rainy Affair

East Rutherford, N.J. (August 5, 2024) – In a display of pure harness racing excellence, Yannick Gingras and his trusty steed Karl emerged victorious in the 99th edition of the prestigious $1.05 million Hambletonian at the Meadowlands on Saturday.

Gingras, a Hall of Fame driver, celebrated his 45th birthday in style, as tears of joy streamed down his face following the triumphant performance. The rain-soaked event witnessed Karl, the odds-on favorite, overcome the challenging rail position to deliver a flawless drive, surging from the middle of the pack and exploding in the stretch to secure a one-length victory with a time of 1:51.6.

“This is the race everyone wants to win, and now I can say I’ve won it,” an elated Gingras expressed, reflecting on his previous 0-for-13 record in Hambletonian finals, now standing at a remarkable 1-for-14.

Owned by a partnership that includes renowned trainer Nancy Takter and her mother Christina Takter, Karl validated his championship-winning season as a 2-year-old and added the prestigious Hambletonian to his growing resume. The $135,000 purchase at the 2022 Lexington select-yearling sale is now 15-for-17 lifetime, with earnings exceeding $1.7 million.

“We’ve known from the beginning that Karl‘s just different,” Nancy Takter said. “If any horse could handle the 1 post position and then the rain, it’d be him. He’s so professional.”

Gingras masterfully navigated the challenging conditions, opting for a patient approach early on before positioning Karl for the winning move. The driver’s confidence was rewarded as Karl stormed past Highland Kismet in the final furlong to secure the coveted Hambletonian crown.

The victory marked the first Hambletonian triumph for Gingras and the second consecutive for trainer Nancy Takter, who now sets her sights on the upcoming Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile and the Breeders’ Crown at the Meadowlands, both in October, to cap off an exceptional season.
