Jockey Faces Allegations of Misconduct in Horse Racing Scandal

In a startling turn of events, jockey Michael Poy has been embroiled in a horse racing scandal, according to evidence heard at the Victorian Racing Tribunal (VRT).

Alleged Misconduct and Betting Allegations

On August 7, 2022, at the Swan Hill racecourse, Poy allegedly messaged professional punter Noah Brash, instructing him to place a $10,000 bet on Poy’s mount, Mr Scorefield, to beat Lewis German’s horse, American Russ, in a head-to-head race. Mr Scorefield finished third, while American Russ came in 11th place.

The tribunal also heard that Poy allegedly directed Brash to bet on his horse, Pill Box, in Race 8, potentially netting over $12,000.

“Both Poy and Brash now face multiple charges from Racing Victoria stewards for activities between April and August 2022, including alleged dishonest practices and betting on races they were involved in.”

Ongoing Investigation

The VRT is currently seeking phone records from Optus to verify the sender and recipient of the messages, as part of the ongoing investigation.

Suspensions and Implications

Poy, who is now based in Western Australia, has not ridden since April 13, 2023, while German has been sidelined since September 2023.

This developing story highlights the critical importance of integrity and transparency within the horse racing industry. The VRT’s investigation will undoubtedly be closely watched by the entire racing community, as the sport seeks to maintain public trust and uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct.
