Exciting Horse Racing News: Laurel Faces Prix Rothschild Reroute, Babouche Ruled Out of Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes
In the world of horse racing, there have been some notable developments this week. Juddmonte’s promising filly Laurel is set for a potential reroute to the Prix Rothschild later this month after a minor setback ruled out a start in the upcoming Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.
Laurel, a daughter of Kingman, had enjoyed a strong start to her career, winning three of her first four outings for the Juddmonte team. However, the five-year-old disappointed as a leading contender in last year’s Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. After returning from over a year on the sidelines to finish a commendable second to stablemate Running Lion in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, Laurel had been expected to compete in Friday’s feature event on the July Course.
“We’ll have to hold tight and get her over that, and we could look at something like the Prix Rothschild (at Deauville on July 28) if she gets over it in time,” Mahon said.
Another Juddmonte-owned filly, Babouche, will also not be making the trip to the July meeting. The youngster had made an impressive winning debut for trainer Ger Lyons at Cork last month and was entered in the Group Two Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes on Friday. However, Mahon explained that Babouche has also experienced a minor setback in her preparation, leading Lyons to conclude that her fitness levels would not be strong enough to compete.
“She’s not going to run. Again, she had a little hold-up and did her first bit of work back on Saturday, and Ger thinks her fitness levels wouldn’t be strong enough to travel over after having a little break, so we’ll probably aim her at something like the Anglesey Stakes,” Mahon added.
Despite these temporary setbacks, Juddmonte remains excited about the prospects of Babouche, who is described as a “high-class filly” with a good pedigree. The racing team is confident that with a little more patience, the filly could prove to be a thrilling prospect for the future.
