Horse Racing News: Kitty Rose Eyes Autumn Targets in Australia After Sandringham Stakes Disappointment
(Source: June 24, 2023)
In the latest Horse Racing News, Kitty Rose could only manage a fifth-place finish in the Sandringham Stakes on Day 4 at Royal Ascot, but her new Australian trainers, Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, remain enthusiastic about her potential.
The daughter of Invincible Army was beaten four lengths by Soprano in the 1609-meter Sandringham Stakes, leading Price to suggest they may need to adjust their race planning for the mare once she is exported to Australia for the upcoming season.
“I would think, watching it, if you’re trying to win the Golden Eagle, you need something with a very good turn of foot, and she’s a big, strong horse and my first thought was, ‘2000 metres’,” said Price, who won the 2021 Golden Eagle with I’m Thunderstruck.
With Kitty Rose set to be classified as a four-year-old in Australia next season, the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) was initially on the cards. However, Price suggested the $5 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) might be a more suitable spring target for the talented mare.
“If that’s as fast as she goes over a mile, I’m not sure that she could win a Golden Eagle,” the trainer added.
Kitty Rose, who was purchased by a group headed by Tim Porter, has had a promising start to her career, winning twice and finishing second twice at Group 3 level in her first four starts for trainer Natalia Lupini.
After the Sandringham Stakes, Kitty Rose may take on the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes (1609m) at Newmarket on July 12 before heading for a break, according to Price.
“She’s a racehorse and if she’s well and there’s a suitable race for her โ the owners paid a lot of money for her โ you’ve got to race them,” the trainer said.
While Kitty Rose does not yet appear in Cox Plate markets, she is currently a $26 chance in Golden Eagle betting with betting apps in Australia.
