HORSE RACING NEWS: Promising Start for Multiple Group 1 Winner Legarto
New Zealand trainer Ken Kelso is thrilled with the recent trial performance of his star mare Legarto, a multiple Group 1 winner. The talented horse won her 900-meter heat against a quality field, prompting Kelso to nominate her for the prestigious Cox Plate.
“She tracked up into the trial today on ground that is not suitable to her either. It was very pleasing,” Kelso said. “She is big and strong, and she has really pleased us at home.”
Jockey Ryan Elliot has been impressed with Legarto‘s noticeable improvement, noting that she is in better form and more forward compared to this time last year.
Legarto is likely to trial again in the upcoming Group and Listed trial at Taupo. If the weather conditions permit, the plan is for her to head to Hastings for the G1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) next month. While a trip to Australia for the Cox Plate is being considered, Kelso acknowledges the attractive prize money on offer in New Zealand.
“Our money here is very good and there is no rush. I have thrown a nomination in today for the Cox Plate. We haven’t made any firm plans until after the Tarzino and probably the Arrowfield.”
In other stable news, Kelso reported the arrival of the first foal out of his former Group 1 winner Levante. The Snitzel filly, born on August 2, is doing well along with her dam.
“I am very happy for the owners, Philip and Catherine Brown,” Kelso added.
Legarto‘s strong trial performance and potential Cox Plate nomination highlight a promising preparation, with plans remaining flexible due to weather and track conditions. Betting apps currently have the New Zealand stayer down the list in Cox Plate markets, but a win in a key lead-up race could boost her chances of securing a spot in the highly competitive field.
