Melea Castle Shines in Metropolitan Wins at Doomben Racecourse
In the latest edition of Horse Racing News, apprentice jockey Melea Castle has been making waves at the Doomben racecourse, securing a impressive metropolitan double.
Castle, a 3kg claiming apprentice, opened the day in style by guiding the $1.75 betting sites favorite Tessatori to victory in the opening race. But the real highlight came in a thrilling finish in a later race, where Castle delivered a scintillating ride aboard the $6.50 chance Mystic Mac.
“He’s a tough little horse, that’s for sure,” Castle acknowledged, praising Mystic Mac’s part in the victory.
In a highly pressurized finish, Castle expertly navigated Mystic Mac through traffic, hugging the rails and delivering a remarkable come-from-behind effort to claim a narrow bob-of-the-head victory. The first three horses crossed the line within a mere 0.06 of a length, showcasing the sheer intensity of the race.
The double on the day was all the more impressive given that Castle’s boss, trainer Chris Meagher, also enjoyed a notable treble at Doomben.
Castle’s hot streak has been building momentum, with the apprentice jockey recording an impressive 25.71% win strike rate over the past three weeks, including metropolitan doubles at both Doomben and Toowoomba, as well as wins at Mackay and Rockhampton.
“You’ve got to ride winners. If you are not riding winners, no matter how well you are riding, nobody notices you … so it is nice to get the ball rolling again,” Castle said, reflecting on her recent resurgence.
Compared to the previous 2023/24 season, where Castle only managed 11 winners, her current form is a remarkable turnaround. The jockey attributes this change to a shift in her mindset, as well as the unwavering support of her boss, Chris Meagher.
“My boss (Chris Meagher) has been a great supporter of mine. He’s been great, not only on the track, but off the track. I’ve hit a few rough patches, and I honestly don’t think I would have got through them without Chris and his stable,” Castle said.
With her recent success, Melea Castle has firmly staked her claim for more opportunities in the saddle, and her impressive performances have caught the attention of the racing community. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on this rising star to see what other triumphs she can deliver in the world of horse racing.
