Nobals Preps for Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Title Defense

Lexington, KY – June 16, 2023

In a significant development for the upcoming horse racing season, the 5-year-old gelding Nobals has been hard at work in preparation for his title defense in the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. According to trainer Larry Rivelli, the accomplished runner, who secured the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint crown in November 2023, will make his 2024 debut in a stakes race at either Horseshoe Indianapolis or Ellis Park in July.

On Thursday, Nobals (Noble Mission), the reigning Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint champion, was clocked in a sharp five-furlong workout of 1:04.2 at Hawthorne Race Course, the fifth fastest of five works at that distance. This followed a previous work seven days ago at the same venue, where he breezed four furlongs.

Rivelli, who has guided Nobals to great success, remains focused on the gelding’s ultimate goal of returning to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in November to defend his title. The veteran conditioner is carefully mapping out the horse’s path, with the upcoming stakes engagement at either Horseshoe Indianapolis or Ellis Park serving as a crucial steppingstone.

“Nobals’ impressive work tabs continue a trend of graded stakes winners putting in noteworthy training sessions across the country.”

Joining Nobals on the workout tab were several other accomplished racehorses, including:

  • Next (Not This Time), a two-time Grade 2 winner, who clocked five furlongs in 1:02.4 at Turfway Park.
  • Bran (Muhaarar), a Grade 2 winner, who went five furlongs in 59.2 seconds at Santa Anita Park.
  • Dubyuhnell (Good Magic), a Grade 2 winner, who worked four furlongs in 49.5 seconds at Saratoga.

As the summer season heats up, horse racing enthusiasts eagerly await the return of Nobals and other top contenders to the track. With the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint defense on the horizon, the racing world will be closely monitoring Nobals’ progress and his quest to repeat as the champion of this prestigious event.
