Pegasus Stakes 2024: Odds and Analysis for Haskell Prep

The post-Triple Crown season in the 3-year-old male division often provides excellent wagering opportunities, as familiar names get overbet while other horses who may deserve a second chance get undervalued. This rings true for the upcoming Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park, a key local prep race for the prestigious Grade 1 Haskell Stakes on July 20.

Domestic Product, the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner, falls into the category of “known names getting overbet.” Despite the buzz surrounding him heading into the Kentucky Derby, he could only manage a 13th-place finish out of 20 runners. The reality is that he may simply lack the necessary speed to be truly competitive at the top level.

On the other hand, Tuscan Sky deserves a “mulligan” after his disappointing seventh-place finish in the Wood Memorial (G2). We are choosing to view that performance as an anomaly and are keen to see if his maiden and allowance victories are a true reflection of his talents. Tuscan Sky will be our single play in this race.

The Pegasus Stakes is the middle leg of an all-stakes Pick 3, with Grade 3 turf races bookending the main event. This presents an opportunity to find value in the surrounding races, while focusing our attention on Tuscan Sky in the Pegasus.

Another horse worthy of consideration is Uncle Heavy, who may be worth a play underneath our single. The Wood Memorial and Preakness Stakes were simply too much for him, but this distance should suit him better, and he is likely to be running strongly at the end. Monmouth Park is known for favoring speed, so with the presence of Domestic Product, Uncle Heavy could provide decent value in the exotics.

“Join us on June 14th at Monmouth Park for the Pegasus Stakes, the latest stop on the road to the Haskell and the 3-year-old male division’s continued evolution.”
