Horse Racing News Update: Pericles Installed as Favorite for PB Lawrence Stakes

In the lead-up to the upcoming spring racing season, Godolphin’s star galloper Pericles has been installed as the opening favorite for the prestigious Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday.

The $300,000 contest, which features a strong field of 15 entries, marks the unofficial start of the weight-for-age racing program. Pericles, who last finished second to Celestial Legend in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, has opened at the top of the Ladbrokes all-in market at $3.

Pericles’ favoritism comes on the back of an impressive trial performance, where he finished second in a 1000m heat at Sydney on August 6. The talented gelding has a proven track record of early-season success, having won first-up in Sydney last year before claiming the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) in his subsequent outing.

Among the leading challengers in the PB Lawrence Stakes are Pinstriped, listed at $5.50 with bookmakers, and the Nick Ryan-trained Munhamek at $7. Gentleman Roy follows at $9, while Chris Waller’s Buckaroo is a $10 chance. The on-pace runner Buffalo River is also considered a contender at $11.

“With Pericles’ strong trial form and his established record of early-spring triumphs, the Godolphin galloper shapes as the horse to beat in this key early-season weight-for-age contest at Caulfield Racecourse.”
