Horse Racing News: Group 1 Winner Ozzmosis Retired to Stud, Trainer Bjorn Baker Looks to Rising Star Caballus for Spring Campaign

The retirement of Group 1 winner Ozzmosis to stud has trainer Bjorn Baker on the hunt for his next young sprinting talent, and he may have found a promising prospect in Caballus.

Caballus, who joined Baker’s stable earlier this year after transferring from the Chris Waller yard, is back in training and the trainer is mapping out an ambitious spring campaign for the rising four-year-old.

“He only had the three runs and he did a super job winning a Group Three,” Baker said. “He ran very well in the Inglis race so after three runs, we just opted to give him a good break. I couldn’t be happier with him now, so I do think we made the right decision.”

Purchased by Darby Racing as an established racehorse, Caballus made an immediate impact, backing up a strong win at Rosehill with victory in the Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick.

Rather than pushing the horse through the autumn, Baker opted to give Caballus a break after he finished third in the Inglis Sprint at Flemington in March, with a long-term view towards the upcoming spring season.

Caballus is on schedule to trial in the coming weeks, and Baker is keeping his options open for the spring, including a potential tilt at the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

“We will look at some of the good sprint races for him, we may even consider taking him down to Melbourne for a race like the Moir Stakes,” Baker revealed. “But I think the best is definitely still to come with him.”

With the retirement of Ozzmosis, all eyes will be on Caballus as Baker looks to unearth his next star sprinter for the new season.
