Horse Racing News: Promising Two-Year-Olds with Pedigree Potential Making Their Debuts
Veteran racing analyst John Ingles highlights three intriguing two-year-olds with eye-catching pedigrees set to make their debuts in the coming days.
Sandown Debut: Jonquil
The Sandown card this afternoon features a seven-furlong maiden (3:00 PM) where most of the colts are making their first racecourse appearance, including the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Jonquil. The Juddmonte-owned son of Lope de Vega hails from the family of superstar Frankel, being the first foal out of Jovial, a useful filly by Dubawi who earned a Timeform rating of 101. Jovial’s half-siblings include the smart Stoute duo Maximal and Jubiloso, as well as last season’s Mill Reef Stakes winner Array. Jonquil’s jockey Ryan Moore is well-versed in this pedigree, having ridden both the colt’s dam and grandam to victories.
Curragh Contenders: Acapulco Bay and Genealogy
Over at the Curragh on Saturday, Aidan O’Brien saddles a couple of intriguing colts in the mile maiden (1:45 PM). While Acapulco Bay, ridden by Moore, will be fancied to go one better than his promising debut at the same track, stablemate Genealogy also commands attention. The 400,000 guineas yearling purchase by Wootton Bassett is a close relative to Artifact, a winner in the United States, and hails from the family of the brilliant Finsceal Beo, winner of the 1000 Guineas double.
Tipperary Talent: Shackleton and County Mayo
Irish racing fans will also want to keep an eye on the nine-furlong maiden at Tipperary on Sunday (2:30 PM), where O’Brien sends out Shackleton, a Camelot colt who was runner-up at Leopardstown last time out. He’s joined by newcomer County Mayo, a son of Wootton Bassett out of a Galileo half-sister to the Arc heroine Danedream. County Mayo’s dam Aspiring was a 790,000 euro purchase, while his full-brother Illinois was a narrow runner-up in last week’s Great Voltigeur Stakes.
