Goodwood Winner Jouncy Set for Group Two Gimcrack Stakes at York

In the world of horse racing, the future looks bright for Goodwood scorer Jouncy, with a step up in class at York’s prestigious Knavesmire next on the agenda for Andrew Balding’s promising young prospect.

Having gained valuable experience earlier in the summer, the son of sire Wootton Bassett was building on his narrow defeat at Kempton when the two-year-old colt opened his winning account at the third attempt on the historic Sussex Downs. Sent off as the 7/4 favorite, the Juddmonte-owned youngster, who is a half-brother to last year’s Mill Reef Stakes winner Array, was ridden prominently by jockey Oisin Murphy and dug deep in the closing stages to see off a talented field of rivals.

“He’s a horse that has always shown promise, and Andrew [Balding] has always held him in high regard,” said Juddmonte’s European Racing Manager Barry Mahon. “He’s a little bit like his brother last year and a slow learner. Array was a slow learner last year, and it took him three runs to break his maiden – and this guy is very much the same.”

Mahon added, “The penny didn’t drop in his first two starts, but Oisin [Murphy] was good and positive on him at Goodwood, and the penny dropped, and he went and won well. We think he wants seven furlongs in time, but we’re looking at the Gimcrack next for him and then stepping up in trip after that.”

With the exciting Jouncy set to take on some of the best two-year-olds in the country at York, racing enthusiasts will be eagerly anticipating his next outing as he looks to continue his progression and confirm his status as a horse to follow this season and beyond.
