Remington Park Unveils Thrilling Thoroughbred Stakes Schedule for Upcoming Season
Remington Park, the premier horse racing destination in Oklahoma, has announced its highly anticipated thoroughbred stakes schedule for the upcoming season, which kicks off on August 16th. The slate of races promises to deliver an exceptional experience for fans and horsemen alike, with over $3 million in stakes purse money up for grabs.
The marquee event of the season will be the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on September 29th. This prestigious race, a key stop on the road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby, will headline an action-packed Oklahoma Derby Day featuring eight stakes events with total purses exceeding $1 million. The meet’s cornerstone race for 2-year-olds, the $300,000 Springboard Mile, which offers qualifying points for the 2025 Kentucky Derby, will conclude the season on Friday, December 13th, with six stakes races, including the newly renamed $75,000 Toby Keith Stakes in honor of the late Oklahoma country singer-songwriter and horse owner.
Keith, who raced primarily under his stable name of Dream Walkin Farms, had an impressive racing career, with his horses earning over $18 million on the track. His top horse, Smack Smack, was a multiple graded stakes winner, including the 2013 Clever Trevor Stakes and 2015 Governor’s Cup at Remington Park, as well as the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3) and the Downs at Albuquerque Handicap in 2016.
Last year’s Oklahoma Derby and Springboard Mile were won by 44-1 long shot How Did He Do That and Otto the Conqueror, respectively, both from the barn of legendary trainer Steve Asmussen, who has now extended his record number of training titles at Remington Park to 18.
The season will also feature the annual Oklahoma Classics Night on Friday, October 18th, where state-bred runners take center stage in a series of lucrative stakes races, including the $175,000 Oklahoma Classics Cup, the richest event of the night.
Remington Park’s upcoming thoroughbred season promises to be an exhilarating showcase of the sport, with top-class racing, exciting storylines, and the continued legacy of Oklahoma’s rich racing heritage. Fans and industry participants alike are eagerly anticipating the start of this thrilling season on August 16th.
