Saratoga Spotlight Shines on Fillies: Spinaway Stakes Set to Thrill on Closing Weekend

The eyes of the horse racing world will turn to Saratoga Race Course this Saturday as the prestigious Spinaway Stakes takes center stage. This Grade 1, $300,000 race for 2-year-old fillies promises an electrifying seven-furlong sprint on the dirt, capping off an exciting closing weekend at the historic upstate New York track.

The field of 11 features a mix of promising young fillies, led by the talented The Queens M G. The dark bay filly is bidding for the Saratoga stakes sweep after upsetting the Schuylerville on opening day and then dominating the Adirondack (G3) earlier this month. Trained by Wesley Ward and ridden by Dylan Davis, The Queens M G is the only stakes winner in the lineup and boasts an impressive three victories from four career starts.

“The Spinaway Stakes is scheduled for 4:20 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Saturday, August 31, and will be televised live on FanDuel Racing and Fox Sports 2. Fans can also bet on the race through the FanDuel Racing platform.”

Though the Spinaway does not offer an automatic Breeders’ Cup berth, the top three finishers will earn valuable incentives through the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Dozen program. Recent Spinaway alumni to go on and win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies include Vequist (2020), Countess Diana (1997), Flanders (1994), and Meadow Star (1990).

Among The Queens M G’s top challengers are Sherbini, who finished second to the favorite in the Schuylerville, and the hard-knocking Reliable Source, a maiden winner at Saratoga last month for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Norm Casse’s Slang, fresh off a debut victory at Churchill Downs, and the John Ortiz-trained Quietside, an impressive maiden winner earlier in the Saratoga meet, also loom as serious contenders.
