Saratoga Set to Open with Talented Field in Listed $175,000 Schuylerville Stakes
(Saratoga, July 13, 2023) The highly anticipated opening day of the 40-day Saratoga summer meet kicks off on Thursday with the running of the listed $175,000 Schuylerville Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for juvenile fillies. Leading the talented 11-horse field is Well-bred Complexion, who will look to build on her impressive debut victory.
Trained by Danny Gargan for owners Arnmore Thoroughbreds and Carl and Yurie Pascarella, the Complexity chestnut filly is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Jack Christopher. After stumbling at the start in her debut, Complexion quickly recovered and went on to win impressively by 6 1/2 lengths, garnering a field-best 77 Beyer Speed Figure. Jockey John Velázquez, a five-time Schuylerville winner, has the mount from post 5.
Other top contenders include Whatintheliteral, who broke her maiden in the Astoria Stakes last out for trainer Jena Antonucci, and the Wesley Ward-trained Long Neck Paula, an eye-catching debut winner at Churchill Downs. Asmussen trainees Aoraki and Viggiedal, as well as Pletcher’s Carmen’s Candy Jar, further strengthen the competitive field.
“The Schuylerville, the 10th of 11 races on the opening day card, is scheduled for a 6:16 p.m. EDT post time. With 71 added-money races worth $20.75 million on tap, the 2023 Saratoga meet is sure to provide thrilling action for horse racing enthusiasts.”
