Multiple Group 1 Winner Legarto Suffers Muscle Strain, Sidelined for Spring Campaign

Multiple Group 1 winning racehorse Legarto has suffered a muscle strain following her recent trial at Te Rapa, disrupting her spring preparation plans.

According to trainers Ken and Bev Kelso, the tough conditions on the Heavy 10 track may have contributed to the strain. As a result, Legarto has been withdrawn from the prestigious G1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings.

The Kelsos have placed Legarto on the “quiet list” and sent her to a water walker for recovery. They expect the mare to require two to three weeks off to heal the injury, which they have described as “nothing major” but still a setback in her spring campaign.

Legarto, a standout performer during her three-year-old season with victories in the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas and G1 Australian Guineas, was originally scheduled for another trial before targeting the Tarzino Trophy. The Kelsos now plan to reassess her options once she has recovered from the muscle strain.

“She has strained a muscle, which she probably did at the trials. It is just a setback,” said trainer Ken Kelso. “She has gone to the water walker and will have two to three weeks off.”

While this is undoubtedly a disappointing development for the connections of Legarto, the injury is not considered severe, and the Kelsos remain hopeful for the mare’s continued success once she has fully recovered. They will take the necessary time to reassess her schedule and determine the next steps in her spring preparation.
