Charles Town Reschedules Racing Card to Beat the Heat
(June 18, 2023 – Charles Town, West Virginia) As the mid-Atlantic region braces for extreme heat, Charles Town Races has pushed back its first post time for Saturday’s racing card to 7:30 p.m. EDT. This decision was made in consultation with state racing officials and horsemen and women, prioritizing the safety of both equine and human participants.
According to the National Weather Service, Charles Town is expected to reach a high of 98 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, with heat indices climbing as high as 104 degrees. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also a possibility, mainly between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. EDT. The overnight low is forecasted to drop to a more comfortable 73 degrees.
The Rescheduled Saturday Card
The rescheduled Saturday card at Charles Town includes eight races, with the richest event being a non-conditioned allowance contest over seven furlongs for 3-year-olds and up. The $31,300 purse has attracted a field of six, led by the 8-5 morning-line favorite, O’Conner Sunset, a son of Curlin who has won three allowance races in a row and four of his last five.
