The talented racehorse Skippylongstocking is gearing up for his next big challenge as he prepares to take on a strong field in the $1 million Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs this Saturday, June 29th.
The 6-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Exaggerator has enjoyed a very successful career so far, amassing an impressive record of 23 starts with 8 wins and over $2.2 million in earnings. Despite his impressive resume, which includes six graded stakes victories, the one accolade that has eluded Skippylongstocking is a coveted Grade 1 triumph.
Trained by the talented Saffie Joseph Jr., Skippylongstocking will be looking to add that elusive Grade 1 win to his credentials in the Stephen Foster, a prestigious “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The hard-hitting bay has been in fine form, coming off a dominant 2 1/2-length victory in the Grade 3 Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in March, followed by a stellar performance in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in April.
“Skippylongstocking is really hitting his stride as he matures, and we’re hoping this could be the race where he finally breaks through and wins that big Grade 1,” said Joseph. “He’s training exceptionally well, and we know he’ll be facing a tough field, but we’re confident he’s ready for the challenge.”
The horse’s $37,000 purchase price at the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ spring sale has proven to be a remarkable bargain, as Skippylongstocking has developed into a consistent and versatile performer. With a strong late kick and proven ability to handle various track conditions, the 5-year-old will once again be ridden by the talented Jose Ortiz in the Stephen Foster.
“This is a horse that we’ve always loved, and it would be amazing to see him finally get that elusive Grade 1 win,” said Ortiz. “He’s been knocking on the door, and I believe this could be his moment to shine on the biggest stage.”
