Superstar Colt City Of Troy to Gallop at Southwell Ahead of Breeders’ Cup Classic
In a significant development in the world of horse racing, the highly acclaimed colt City Of Troy is set to make a special appearance at Southwell Racecourse on September 20th as part of his preparation for the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Classic. The winner of this year’s Derby and Eclipse, City Of Troy, has firmly established himself as one of the leading contenders for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup event at Del Mar.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners have made no secret of their Classic ambitions, with the son of American Triple Crown winner Justify seen as the perfect candidate for the headline event. To ensure City Of Troy is primed and ready, O’Brien has decided to simulate full raceday conditions at Southwell, with the colt set to work over a distance of approximately a mile from American starting stalls, accompanied by a team of stablemates.
“It’s been confirmed this morning that City Of Troy will go to Southwell on September 20 for a racecourse gallop. We’re delighted that Southwell have been able to accommodate the request, and Aidan and all the team are looking forward to it fitting nicely into his programme.”
- Chris Armstrong, representing O’Brien at Navan
This move follows in the footsteps of previous Breeders’ Cup contenders, such as Giant’s Causeway and Galileo, who have utilized Southwell’s facilities to prepare for their American campaigns. The Southwell executive director, Mark Clayton, expressed his delight at welcoming one of the world’s leading horses to the Nottinghamshire track.
“We are absolutely delighted to have Aidan O’Brien, as one of the leading trainers in the world, bring City Of Troy, one of the leading horses in the world this year, to Southwell. It’s a testament to the track and the work we do as a team, but also to Tapeta and the surface they delivered us back in 2022, that we are trusted by Aidan to bring a horse of City Of Troy’s caliber to Southwell prior to the Breeders’ Cup.”
- Mark Clayton, Southwell executive director
The public will be invited to witness this historic event, with the finer details and timings to be confirmed in the coming weeks. This opportunity to see the mighty City Of Troy in action is sure to generate significant interest among racing enthusiasts, as they eagerly await the horse’s performance on the global stage of the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
