Tamerlane Primed for Civic Stakes Glory at Warwick Farm
Horse Racing News, [Current Date]
The Randwick race meeting scheduled for last Saturday was washed out, but the rescheduling of the feature Civic Stakes has created an exciting opportunity for punters and the Godolphin team. The $200,000 listed event, normally held at Randwick, will be run for the first time at Warwick Farm over 1400 meters.
Godolphin’s Tamerlane, a $3.70 favorite, is set to improve on his last start disappointment at Scone, where he finished ninth in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m). Trainer James Cummings says a sharp trial win between runs has the six-year-old gelding ready to tackle his pet distance, which has delivered four of his nine career victories.
“He has drawn ideally in barrier 1 and strips much fitter now. He looks well-placed here and should prove hard to beat,” Cummings said.
The top weight of 59.5 kilos will present a challenge, but Tamerlane has firmed from $4 in the betting after his most recent trial performance on a Heavy 8 track at Rosehill. With the Warwick Farm surface currently rated Heavy 9 and more rain forecast, the conditions should suit the gelding.
Tamerlane’s closest rival in the markets is the Joe Pride-trained Estadio Mestalla at $5.
The rescheduled Civic Stakes promises an exciting opportunity for favorite backers and the Godolphin team to secure a black-type victory on a Wednesday at Warwick Farm. All eyes will be on Tamerlane as he looks to bounce back from his last start disappointment and continue his affinity with the 1400-meter distance.
