Cox Plate Nominations Revealed: International Flair and Former Winners Highlight 2024 Lineup
The nominations for the 2024 Cox Plate, the Moonee Valley Racing Club’s (MVRC) flagship event, have been released, with 137 horses vying for the prestigious middle-distance weight-for-age contest.
While the total number of entries is down from the 178 seen 12 months ago, the international contingent has grown, with 20 overseas gallopers nominated, up from 17 in the previous year. Notably, three runners from Japan have been entered, marking a return of Japanese representation to Australia’s signature middle-distance race since Lys Gracieux’s victory in 2019.
“We’re happy with the quality, especially from the international contingent,” said Charlotte Mills, the head of racing at the MVRC. “Plus, we also have three former runners in Fangirl, Mr Brightside and Young Werther among the entries also.”
The betting markets have already installed star mare Pride Of Jenni as the early favorite at $5, though the race is expected to be one of the most open in recent years based on the current odds. The Cox Plate is scheduled to be run and won on October 28 at the iconic Moonee Valley Racecourse.
