Delaware Oaks Attracts Competitive Sophomore Filly Field Vying for Grade 3 Glory
On Saturday, a field of seven talented 3-year-old fillies will take to the Delaware Park racetrack to contest the $300,000 Delaware Oaks (G3). This 1 1/16-mile affair serves as a key prep for the prestigious Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, with 15 fillies having captured victory in both races since 1938.
The Delaware Oaks has seen a remarkable trio of 3-year-old champions emerge victorious in recent years, including Proud Spell (2008), Careless Jewel (2009), and the outstanding Blind Luck (2010). The 2010 edition marked the first clash between Blind Luck and her fierce rival Havre de Grace, igniting a thrilling six-race showdown between the talented fillies.
This year’s contenders include Gulfstream Oaks (G2) winner Power Squeeze, looking to bounce back from a third-place effort in the Acorn Stakes (G1). Also entered are Call Another Play, third in the Black-Eyed Susan (G2), and Ringy Dingy, who finished sixth in that same race. Sidamara, a well-bred prospect from the barn of trainer Bill Mott, will step up for her first graded stakes challenge.
The Delaware Oaks is carded as the ninth of ten races on the Saturday card at Delaware Park, with a post time of 4:30 p.m. EDT. Handicappers Ashley Tamulonis of Coast To Coast and Laurie have provided their detailed analysis and selections for this competitive sophomore filly showdown.
Laurie’s Take
The history of the Delaware Oaks over the last dozen years has been somewhat unpredictable, with only five winners hitting the board in their previous start. Pace-pressing runners have fared best, accounting for seven victories, while two pacesetters and a lone closer have also prevailed. This year’s field includes a mix of running styles, making for an intriguing betting race.
Ashley’s Insights
It appears Mystic Lake will have the advantage of an uncontested lead, as her main pace rivals Ringy Dingy and Princess Indy don’t seem inclined to pressure her early. The daughter of Arrogate, Sidamara, looks like a logical upsetter against the favorite Power Squeeze, who has yet to be the betting choice in any of her wins.
