The Spotlight Shines on the Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama Stakes
Six of the fillies in the Alabama field are stakes winners, including three with Grade 2 victories to their names. Furthermore, five of the contenders are coming off recent winning efforts, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive race.
Candied, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, is the lone Grade 1 winner in the field, having captured the prestigious Alcibiades Stakes as a juvenile. The Candy Ride filly followed that up with a close third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. This year, she started with a fifth-place effort in the Ashland (G1) before moving to Monmouth Park, where she won the Lady’s Secret by over four lengths as the odds-on favorite. In her most recent start, Candied finished second behind the division leader Thorpedo Anna in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga, but she was well clear of the rest of the field.
Candied’s main challengers include Power Squeeze, a Union Rags filly who has won four stakes races this year, including the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) and the Delaware Oaks (G3). Another contender is Just Basking, an Arrogate filly who broke her maiden at Churchill Downs going the Alabama distance of 1 1/4 miles and most recently won the Iowa Oaks.
