Horse Racing News Update: National Treasure Returns to Work
National Treasure, the 4-year-old Quality Road colt trained by Bob Baffert, returned to the work tab on Monday for the first time since winning the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. The multiple Grade 1 winner (2024 Metropolitan Handicap, 2024 Pegasus World Cup Invitational, 2023 Preakness) worked four furlongs in 48.8 seconds at Santa Anita, ranking 19th fastest out of 53 works at the distance.
This was National Treasure’s first work since his last race, where he scored a gate-to-wire win by 6 1/4 lengths in the Met Mile. Earlier this year, the talented colt started with a victory in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) before finishing fourth in the Saudi Cup (G1).
Baffert’s other top performers also turned in notable works on Monday. Grade 1 winner Du Jour (2024 Frank E. Kilroe Mile) went five furlongs in 1:01.0, while multiple Grade 1 winner Stronghold (2024 Santa Anita Derby) covered five furlongs in 59.8 seconds, both at Santa Anita.
“We’re excited to see National Treasure back on the track and looking strong in his recent work,” said Baffert. “He’s a talented colt and we’re looking forward to his upcoming races.”
