Timeform’s Tony McFadden Previews Key Races at Carlisle’s Big Day

Carlisle Racecourse is set for its biggest event of the season on Wednesday, with a seven-race card featuring the prestigious Cumberland Plate and Carlisle Bell handicaps, as well as the listed Eternal Stakes. The quality of the races and the lucrative prize money has attracted several high-profile jockeys from the south, including James Doyle, who last rode at Carlisle a decade ago but enjoyed a successful outing with a winner and two seconds.

Doyle, fresh off a notable performance at Royal Ascot last week, will have just one ride at Carlisle, partnering Jabaara in the Eternal Stakes (3:35 PM). Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings have Jabaara 5 lb clear of the field following a smooth victory at Musselburgh earlier this month.

The Cumberland Plate (3:05 PM) is a fiercely competitive affair, with 12 runners set to go to post. However, one horse stands out in Timeform’s assessment โ€“ Sea The Thunder, trained by Ralph Beckett. The three-year-old is the only runner of that age in the race, a rarity in the last decade, and Timeform’s figures have him 4 lb clear of his rivals, with the ‘p’ flag indicating further improvement is likely.

Elsewhere on the card, Jouncy, a half-brother to the legendary Frankel, will contest the six-furlong maiden at Kempton (6:40 PM). Jouncy made a promising debut at Newbury last month, earning the Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ flag, and the ‘p’ for potential improvement.

One horse to keep an eye on in the Carlisle feature races is Dembe, who has been with trainer Simon Pearce for a short time but has shaped well in second on two of his three starts for the yard, both over the Carlisle course and distance. Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings have Dembe 5 lb clear at the head of the field, and he looks well-treated off a 2 lb higher mark after his latest strong performance.

“With a mix of high-profile jockeys, prominent stable representatives, and horses with promising Timeform profiles, Wednesday’s racing at Carlisle promises an exciting day of action for horse racing enthusiasts.”
