HORSE RACING NEWS: Inisherin Faces Tough Field in July Cup
(Newmarket, July 14) As the highly anticipated My Pension Expert July Cup approaches this Saturday, top sprinter Inisherin will face a formidable field of 11 rivals in his first outing against older horses.
Trained by Kevin Ryan, the speedy Inisherin has been a revelation since reverting to sprinting, following a creditable performance in the 2000 Guineas earlier this season. The colt inflicted a first career defeat on Vandeek in the Sandy Lane at Haydock before putting up an impressive display in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Inisherin now looks to emulate the success of last year’s July Cup winner, Shaquille, who had won the same Ascot race before his triumph.
Veteran jockey Tom Eaves, who has won a Prix de l’Abbaye, a Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, and a Prix Maurice de Gheest, will be in the saddle for Inisherin. Eaves, whose partner Amy is the daughter of trainer Kevin Ryan, is confident in the horse’s abilities, stating:
“Inisherin is a very good horse. He’s the best I’ve sat on, so I’m looking forward to Saturday. He’s got a very good mind and a lot of pure ability.”
Vandeek, who suffered his first defeat at the hands of Inisherin, will have a chance to avenge that loss, with connections expecting a bold showing. Trainer Simon Crisford acknowledged the minor setback that forced Vandeek to miss Royal Ascot, but expressed confidence in the horse’s return to peak health.
The older brigade is led by Ed Bethell’s Regional, the winner of last season’s Sprint Cup at Haydock, who will look to improve on his recent outings. Other notable contenders include Kinross, Khaadem, and Mitbaahy, ensuring a highly competitive renewal of the prestigious July Cup.
