Horse Racing News: William Buick Bags a Double at Carlisle, Jabaara Continues Winning Streak
Carlisle Racecourse played host to an exciting day of racing, with dual champion jockey William Buick securing a memorable double on the card.
Buick’s first winner came aboard Bountiful, a filly trained by George Boughey, in the Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Novice Stakes. Bountiful, who had previously won at Thirsk, delivered an impressive performance to defeat a field of colts, crossing the line nearly five lengths clear of the 125/1 runner-up Cugini.
“She did it really well. I’ve never ridden here before, so it’s nice to be here and tick one off the list,” said Buick, who also claimed the concluding Great Community Raceday Saturday 6th July Fillies’ Handicap with Sir Michael Stoute’s Red Pixie.
Buick was joined by fellow jockey James Doyle, who secured his first Carlisle winner in over a decade aboard Jabaara in the £47,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Eternal Stakes. The Roger Varian-trained filly, a 6/4 shot, followed up on her previous Listed victory at Musselburgh, holding off the challenge of Key To Cotai by a length and a quarter.
“It’s always nice to come to these northern tracks, the crowd here today is brilliant and everyone is getting pictures and conversing with you. It’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?” said Doyle.
The historic Stablemate By AGMA Carlisle Bell, one of the track’s most prestigious races, went the way of David O’Meara’s veteran performer Orbaan, ridden by Danny Tudhope. The one-mile feature, with its two bells on offer to the winner, is reputed to be the oldest sporting trophy in the world, first presented in 1599.
Elsewhere on the card, Ralph Beckett’s three-year-old The Thunder readily justified favoritism in the Stablemate By AGMA Cumberland Plate, while newcomer Two Shoes, trained by Julie Camacho, delivered an eye-catching debut victory in the Alan Jennings Last Orders Memorial Restricted Maiden Stakes.
